Residency Classification
Determining whether you are classified as "in-state" or "out-of-state" is quite important as it greatly impacts what you will pay in tuition. For more information on residency, please visit the Registrar's Office Web site and read the official Residency Classification Guide.
State of Residency
Applicants to The University of Tennessee, Main Campus (undergraduate and graduate schools); The University of Tennessee, College of Law; and The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine are classified as "in-state" or "out-of state" for the purpose of admission and payment of fees.

The Assistant Dean of Enrollment Services serves as the Residency Coordinator.
The Residency Appeals Committee
If a student has addressed his or her concerns with the residency classifier and with the Residency Coordinator, he or she may then bring claims to the Residency Appeals Committee, This committee is comprised of the following:
- The Assistant Dean of Enrollment Servicesserves as an ex officio, non-voting member
- Four administrators
- Nine faculty members
- Four students (two undergraduates, two graduates)
» UT participates in the National Student Exchange Program. Students may study at participating universities without having to pay the high cost of out-of-state tuition. [Learn more]
» UT is a member of the Academic Common Market. The Academic Common Market is an agreement among Southern states for sharing unique programs. Participating states can make arrangements for their residents who are fully admitted to specific programs at UT to enroll on an in-state tuition basis if these programs are not available in the state of residence.
