University Honors on Rocky Top: Find your fit

Looking for a college experience that challenges you, connects you, and helps you stand out? Check out our University Honors programs! We offer two unique programs to challenge high-achieving students and give them opportunities to shine: the Chancellor’s Honors Program (CHP) and the Haslam Leadership Scholars (HALS)

Chancellor’s Honors Program (CHP)

Think small classes, big opportunities. CHP is UT’s largest honors program, designed to give you a deeper, more engaging college experience.

  • Small, discussion-based honors courses across different subjects
  • A senior capstone project or research experience
  • Faculty mentors to guide you along the way
  • An exclusive Living & Learning Community (LLC) with other honors students to build strong relationships and connections
  • Annual book/tech stipend (up to $3,500 over four years)
  • Chancellor’s Honor Program Minor around Complex-Problem Solving

What it takes: 18 credit hours of honors coursework and maintaining a 3.5 GPA.

Haslam Leadership Scholars (HALS)

Think full scholarship + leadership focus. HALS is UT’s most competitive honors program, with a small cohort (about 15 students per year).

  • Full scholarship covering tuition, fees, housing, and meals
  • Leadership-focused courses and a minor in leadership
  • Guaranteed study abroad after your first year
  • A Tennessee-based internship experience and hands-on leadership projects
  • Strong mentorship and a tight-knit cohort

What it takes: A rigorous application and selection process. Scholars are chosen for both academic strength and leadership potential. 18 credit hours of honors coursework and maintaining a 3.5 GPA.

Which program is right for you?

  • CHP: Great if you want interdisciplinary, complex-problem solving, honors courses, mentorship, and flexibility across majors.
  • HALS: Perfect if you want a fully funded, leadership-centered experience with built-in study abroad and internships.

Both programs connect you with a community of curious, driven students and open doors to research, service, and leadership at UT (and beyond).
