Explore Knoxville: UT Alum-Owned Businesses to Visit

Welcome to Rocky Top! If you’re planning a visit to the University of Tennessee for an admissions event or campus tour, we encourage you to explore all that Knoxville and the East Tennessee region have to offer. Knoxville is full of unique spots owned and operated by proud UT alumni to check out and support while you’re in town!

Here are some must-visit local spots owned by VFLs (Vols for Life) that are loved by everyone who calls Knoxville home:

Cruze Farm — Creamery with a Heart

Owned and operated by UT grads Colleen Cruze Bhatti and Manjit Bhatti, Cruze Farm brings you some of the freshest dairy products you’ll find anywhere. The fresh-churned ice cream is a local favorite. The Gay Street location is the closest to campus, and we, of course, recommend their Rocky Top Road flavor!

K-Brew — Coffee and Community

Known for its craft coffees and New York-style bagels, K-Brew is a beloved coffee shop owned by UT alumni brothers Pierce LaMacchia and Michael LaMacchia. Grab a latte, meet some locals, and soak in the community spirit while fueling your day. Fun fact: In 2024, K Brew became the first local business on UT’s campus, replacing a national chain in the Haslam College of Business building. There’s now a second K Brew location on campus in Fred Brown Jr. Hall.

Oglewood Avenue — A Plant Lover’s Paradise

Founded by UT alumna Jade Adams, Oglewood Avenue is Knoxville’s go-to plant boutique, featuring a curated selection of houseplants, pots, and plant-care essentials. Just minutes from campus, it’s a fun, approachable spot to pick out a plant you can take home as a living souvenir of your trip to Rocky Top.

Paris Woodhull Illustrations – Colorful, Local, and Full of Heart

Paris Woodhull, a proud UT alumna with a BFA in 2D Art, founded her creative studio in 2015. What began as a dorm-room hobby has blossomed into a full-fledged business that celebrates Knoxville’s charm. Her downtown studio at 121 S Gay Street serves as both a retail space and screen-printing studio. You can even spot her work in the form of a mural on the State Street Garage, created in partnership with Undergraduate Admissions!

Maple Hall – Knoxville’s Boutique Bowling Alley

Owned by UT alumnus Kevin Rice, Maple Hall is Knoxville’s go-to spot for fun, combining classic bowling with great food. This boutique bowling alley offers a lively atmosphere perfect for some friendly competition. Whether you’re a seasoned bowler or just looking to relax after exploring campus, Maple Hall is sure to deliver a memorable experience.

Dogwood Arts — Celebrating Local Creativity

Dogwood Arts is a nonprofit organization led by UT grad Sherry Jenkins. Dedicated to celebrating and promoting local art, music, and culture throughout East Tennessee, it’s a fantastic way to experience the creative heartbeat of Knoxville! Check their calendar to see if any events or exhibitions are happening during your visit.

Visiting these alum-owned spots is a great way to experience Knoxville’s welcoming community and culture—just like what you’ll find on the UT campus. No matter your interests, there’s always something to enjoy around town. You can view all that Knoxville has to offer and upcoming community events on the Visit Knoxville website. We hope your visit leaves you inspired and excited to join the Volunteer family soon!
