The Better FAFSA

File your FAFSA!

We want you to succeed on Rocky Top, and a key part of your success as a UT student is financial aid access. We encourage you to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to become eligible for most types of financial aid from UT, including scholarships (like TN HOPE Scholarship), grants, the Federal Work-Study program, student loans and more. File your FAFSA by March 15, 2024, to be eligible for the most types of aid!

The FAFSA application process is new this year!

The FAFSA form used to be long, complicated and required a lot of manual tax income information, which led to increased errors on the application. The “Better FAFSA”, introduced through the FAFSA Simplification Act, is shorter, easier to file and automatically imports tax information, which allows for fewer errors. Plus, the FAFSA’s new formula provides more eligibility for Pell Grants than ever before!

A new process brings up many questions about the FAFSA application process! You likely have questions around:

  • Documents Needed to Complete the FAFSA
  • Starting Your FAFSA
  • Determining Your Dependency Status
  • Reporting Parent or Guardian Information
  • Submitting the FAFSA
  • and More!

Federal Student Aid has provided answers to all of these questions at their website. You can find a how to guide here.

We’re here to help!
