A Rocky Top Transfer Student’s Experience

Choosing a college is not an easy decision. Like many students, I knew I ultimately wanted to end up at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but I wasn’t always sure what path would get me there. As a current student in the Rocky Top Transfer Program, I understand that transferring can sound overwhelming and uncertain. However, this program is specifically designed to support students every step of the way, making the transition smooth and manageable.

One of the most important aspects of the Rocky Top Transfer Program is how straightforward the transfer process is. Students receive consistent guidance on course selection through dedicated academic advisors. At Pellissippi State Community College (Pellissippi State CC), each student is assigned an advisor who helps plan schedules, monitor academic progress, and ensures students stay on track. This structure is reassuring for both students and families—no one navigates the process alone.

After completing two semesters at Pellissippi State CC, maintaining a 3.0 GPA, and earning at least 24 transferable credit hours, students are eligible to transfer to UT. There is no additional application required—Pellissippi State CC handles the transfer process and sending transcripts. Many majors offer guaranteed transfer if program requirements are met; competitive majors require additional review and are not guaranteed.

Cost is another major factor when choosing a college, and Rocky Top Transfer is a cost-effective, transfer-friendly option. The program allows students to complete general education coursework at a significantly lower cost while still working toward a UT degree. From my experience, starting college in smaller class sizes has reduced stress and made the transition into college life much more manageable.

Pellissippi State CC also offers transfer scholarships for students who maintain a 3.25 GPA or higher. These scholarships can be applied annually for up to six semesters after transferring to UT.

As a Rocky Top Transfer student, I can confidently say that concerns about not feeling like a “real college student” are far from my reality. I live in an apartment near UT’s campus with friends who are also in the program. This allows me to attend sporting events, explore campus, and build friendships just like any other first-year student. With the closest Pellissippi State CC campus only about ten minutes away, transportation is convenient and accessible.

Rather than feeling disconnected, being part of Rocky Top Transfer has helped me become more independent. As an out-of-state student, moving halfway across the country was intimidating, but this program provided the structure and support I needed. Pellissippi State CC recognizes that every student’s journey is different. Some students use the program to explore possible majors, while others focus on building a strong academic foundation before transferring. The flexibility of the program allows students time to grow, gain confidence, and discover their strengths.

Looking back, choosing the Rocky Top Transfer Program was one of the best decisions I could have made. It equipped me with the preparation, support, and guidance necessary for success. For students and families considering this option, Rocky Top Transfer is more than just a stepping stone—it is a supportive starting point that prepares students to move forward with confidence.
